(Outdoor) Drowning Prevention Safety Features CRC appendix AX (AV100.2)

  • Applies to new or existing remodeled pool/spa at private and single-family homes

One of the following 7 safety features

  1. Shall be isolated from the home by an enclosure per AV100.3
  2. Removable mesh pool fence ASTM-F2286 with self-close and latch lockable gate
  3. Approved safety pool cover ASTM-F1346
  4. The residence shall be equipped with exit alarms on doors providing direct access to the pool
  5. All doors with direct access from the home to the pool shall be self-close and latch mechanism ≥ 54” above the floor
  6. The alarm which will sound off when detecting accidental or unauthorized entrance to the water ASTM-F2208
  7. Other means that ≥ features 1-4 and have been verified by an approved testing laboratory meeting standards of ASTM

Enclosure Requirements (all of the following)

  • Access gates open away from the pool and are self-close+latching (latching device ≥ 5’ above ground)
  • Enclosure ≥ 5’ in height
  • Enclosure is ≤ 2” off the ground
  • Gaps or voids don’t allow passage of ≥ 4” sphere 
  • The outside surface is free of protrusions or cavities or characteristics that serve as hand holds or foot holds enabling a child to climb over

Pool/Spa Electrical CEC 680

  • Equipment rooms/pits must have drainage preventing water accumulation CEC 680.12
  • Disconnecting Means: within sight and > 5′ away from the water’s edge
  • Water heaters heating elements -subdivide loads ≤ 48 amps and protected at 60-amps. The ampacity of branch circuit conductors and rating of overcurrent shall be not less than 125% of the total nameplate-rated load CEC 680.10
  • Underground wiring is prohibited under the pool or within 5’ of the water’s edge. (exceptions where space is limited and wiring is necessary for pool equipment – ok in approved conduit and depth) CEC 680.11
  • Utilization equipment: One or more maintenance means of disconnect shall be readily accessible ≥ 5’ away from the water’s edge and within sight of the equipment. CEC 680.13
  • Branch circuits feeding pool motors shall be in an approved conduit and have an insulated ground sized per conductor not less than #12 AWG CEC 680.21.A.1
  • Outlets 120-240 recept or hardwire shall be GFCI CEC 680.21.C
  • Cord and plug (shall be grounding type plug) pool motors 3’ max ECG ≥ 12 AWG CEC 680.21.A.3
  • Service receptacle: 1 or more recept on general-purpose branch 6’ – 20’ from the inside edge of the pool (≤ 6’6” above floor, platform, grade)
  • Circulation and Sanitation system location – receptacle serving circ and san equipment ≥ 10’ from the inside edge of the pool. Conditions: single receptacle, grounding type recept, GFCI
  • Receptacles: (Other than circ and san) – shall be ≥ 6’ from the inside edge of the pool
  • GFCI: recept – all recept ≤ 20’ from waters edge CEC 680.22(a)(4)
  • Electrically operated pool covers: ≥ 5’ from the water’s edge. Controls are to be located with a full view of the pool. All equipment is listed for wet location. GFCI protected branch circuit.

Lighting/fans

  • (OUTDOOR) Luminaire, Light outlets, Ceiling fans – above and within 5’ of the inside edge of the pool ≥ 12’ above the max water level CEC 680.22(B)(1)
  • (INDOOR) If GFCI circuit – Luminaire, Light outlets, Ceiling fans- above and within 5’ of the inside edge of the pool ≥ 7’6” above the max water level. Totally enclosed luminaire, listed fan CEC 680.22(B)(2)
  • Luminaires wall mounted top of lens ≥ 18” below the water line unless listed for lesser no luminaire shall be 4” below normal water level
  • All forming shells with NM conduit shall have provision for terminating an 8 AWG ground except low-voltage

Bonding Min #8 awg w/ listed clamps (Direct Burial)

  10. Exception: Spa and Hot Tub with all of the following conditions:
    • 1. Listed as self-contained for above-ground use
    • 2. Not identified as suitable for indoor use only
    • 3. Installed per manufacture instructions and located on or above ground
    • 4. Top rim of the spa/hot tub ≥ 28” above perimeter surfaces within 30” (above ground spa installed in/on a trenched pad) CEC 680.42(B)(1-4)

Plumbing

  • Water supply shall have one of the following: air gap, vacuum breaker, or backflow preventer CPC 603.5.5 CPC 603.5.20
  • Waste water pipes shall be installed as indirect waste CPC 813.0
  • Pool Heaters shall have a readily accessible on/off switch
